Managed Switch

A managed switch is a network switch that can be configured, monitored and split into VLANs instead of just passing cables through.
A managed switch connects multiple network devices over cables like any switch, but adds a configuration interface on top. That interface is used to set up VLANs, disable or prioritise individual ports, and keep an eye on the network's status over time. An unmanaged switch, by contrast, simply forwards traffic with no way to configure it from outside.
In practice, a managed switch is recognisable by a web or command-line interface used to log in and configure ports, VLANs or traffic prioritisation, known as QoS. Many models also show which device is connected to which port, how much traffic runs through it, and whether a port is delivering PoE. That makes network troubleshooting noticeably faster than with an unmanaged counterpart.
A common mistake is buying a managed switch and never configuring it — at that point it behaves like an unmanaged switch, just at a higher price. Just as risky is a managed switch left on its factory password or without its own dedicated management VLAN, since that lets anyone on the network reach its configuration interface.
What it means in practice
For a business, this means once more than a handful of devices, several areas, or PoE cameras are involved, a managed switch is what makes network segmentation and troubleshooting possible in the first place. Without it, splitting a network into VLANs or monitoring it in any meaningful way is barely feasible.
