Why doesn't a standard office network work on a factory floor?

A factory floor combines machine controllers running operating systems that are years old with dust, temperature swings and forklift traffic, conditions a standard office network was never built for. NDVDL separates the production network from the office network using dedicated VLANs and a firewall between them, so a problem on one side does not spread to the other. On the shop floor itself, industrial switches and Wi-Fi coverage planned around metal racking and hall geometry keep machines and handheld devices connected. Because a network outage on the production floor stops a shift immediately rather than just slowing it down, NDVDL designs the infrastructure around shift-floor availability rather than office assumptions.

Production machines and office laptops sit on the same network with no VLAN or firewall between them. If a device in the office gets compromised, the machine controllers on the floor are exposed the same way the front-desk PC is.

Separating the production network from the office network

Machines and office IT run in their own VLANs, separated by a firewall that controls traffic between them. That keeps an office-network problem away from production, and the other way round.

Wi-Fi coverage planned for the shop floor

NDVDL plans access points and industrial switches around the actual geometry of the hall, including metal racking, ceiling height and forklift routes. The result is Wi-Fi that reaches where scanners, tablets and material handling equipment actually operate.

Controlled remote access for machine vendors

Access for machine manufacturers is set up for the specific case, limited in time, and closed again once maintenance is done. That keeps a record of who could reach which controller and when.

Connecting ERP/MES systems to machine data

NDVDL connects machine controllers and sensors to existing ERP or MES software, so production data reaches the systems that need it. Existing systems are integrated, not replaced.

Backup for production and administrative data

Design data, machine programs and administrative data are backed up on a regular basis, separated by how critical they are to keep the plant running. A failed machine or server stops being a data-loss event.

Video surveillance for gates and storage areas

Camera systems for goods receiving, gates and storage areas are planned around day-to-day operations and forklift traffic without loading down the production network. Recording and access are set up to match how the plant actually works.
