An SFP module is a pluggable transceiver that connects a switch or router port to a specific cable type and speed.
An SFP module is a small, pluggable transceiver inserted into a dedicated slot on a switch or router, where it converts electrical signals to optical signals or vice versa. It exists because it lets a switch avoid being locked to one cable type, working with copper, multimode fiber, or single-mode fiber depending on which module is inserted.
In practice, the right module simply slides into the SFP slot without opening the switch; SFP denotes 1-gigabit links, SFP+ denotes 10 gigabit, and larger form factors like QSFP handle even higher speeds. Which module fits which slot depends on the switch model and the cable type required.
A common mistake is mixing modules from different vendors without checking compatibility: many switches only accept certified or compatible modules, and an unsupported module is simply not recognized. Both ends of a fiber run also need matching module types, or no link comes up at all.
What it means in practice
An SFP module becomes relevant for a business when a fiber run between two buildings needs to be connected, or when a switch port needs to move to a higher speed without replacing the entire switch.
