Band Steering

In short

Band steering is an access point feature that automatically nudges devices toward the less congested frequency band, usually 5 GHz.

Many devices default to connecting on the 2.4 GHz band because it has longer range, even though it's typically slower and more congested than 5 GHz. Band steering tries to actively move dual-band devices onto the less-crowded band.

In practice, the access point briefly delays or ignores a device's connection attempt on 2.4 GHz if that same device also supports 5 GHz, prompting it to connect there instead. Users don't notice any of this because both bands run under the same SSID.

An edge case worth knowing: overly aggressive band steering can cause connection delays for older devices that only support 2.4 GHz. And for devices sitting far from the access point, 5 GHz's shorter range makes it not automatically the better option — band steering isn't a cure-all for a congested network.

What it means in practice

In offices with many devices on the same Wi-Fi, band steering measurably relieves an overcrowded 2.4 GHz band. Poorly configured, though, it can slow down older devices or printers — NDVDL tunes the setting to the actual device mix on site.
