In short

IoT devices (Internet of Things) are networked devices such as sensors, cameras or controllers that send or receive data without being regular computers.

IoT devices cover every networked device beyond PCs, laptops and servers: temperature sensors, video cameras, access readers, smart controllers, weather stations, or label printers. They exist because more and more physical processes are meant to be monitored or controlled digitally without needing a full computer to do it. What they have in common is that they connect to the network but are rarely maintained the way a regular workstation is.

In practice, these devices sit on the same network as workstations and servers, connected by cable or Wi-Fi, simply because that's the easiest way to get them running. Many keep the password they shipped with for years and rarely, if ever, receive a firmware update, because no fixed process exists for it. Unlike a laptop, an outdated IoT camera or an old sensor barely draws attention day to day as long as it still does its job.

The typical mistake is putting IoT devices on the same network as office PCs and servers because it's the fastest way to get them working. That becomes a problem the moment one of these devices is compromised: an attacker who takes over a camera or sensor can move from there, within the same network, to systems that device was never supposed to have anything to do with.

What it means in practice

For a business, this means putting IoT devices on their own network segment that only allows the connections each device actually needs, rather than full access to the rest of the network. A sign that this separation is missing is cameras, sensors or controllers sitting on the same IP range as workstations and servers.
