In short

Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) succeeds Wi-Fi 6 and further improves connection quality for many devices at once, partly by using multiple frequency bands together.

Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) follows Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) and introduces, among other things, Multi-Link Operation (MLO), a technique that lets a single device stay connected across multiple frequency bands at the same time — say, 5 GHz and 6 GHz together instead of just one. That improves connection reliability, since a band experiencing interference can be offset by another.

As with Wi-Fi 6, the real leap shows up where many devices transmit at once and the connection needs to stay stable, not in the advertised top speed of a single laptop under ideal conditions. In densely occupied environments, Wi-Fi 7 further cuts the waiting time individual devices experience and makes the connection less sensitive to interference from neighboring Wi-Fi networks or other radio sources.

One grey area many overlook: Wi-Fi 7 only delivers its benefits when both the access point and the end device support the standard. Many devices in daily use — printers, handheld scanners, older laptops — don't support it yet. Swapping out access points alone, without matching end devices, makes little noticeable difference in that case.

What it means in practice

For new deployments with high device density, in heavily used areas for example, Wi-Fi 7 is worth considering once the end devices in use also support the standard. If Wi-Fi 6 already covers current device density well, an immediate switch isn't strictly necessary.
